To nurture friendships for Christ throughout the world

An assignment i did on John Hicks false beliefs concerning the Incarnation

When we Speak of Jesus being incarnate, we are talking about the 'act whereby the eternal son of God, the second person of the Holy Trinity, without ceasing to be what he is, God the son, took into union with himself what he before the act did not posses, a human nature' (Reymond 1984: 555) From the early years of the church, this concept has been discussed as people have tried to figure out a part of theology that is ultimately impossible to completely comprehend. The idea that Jesus of Nazareth could be completely human and completely God is something that goes beyond the mind of a mere person. Unfortunately, there are people in the world today who refuse to believe in something that they cannot reason with their own minds. One of those people is a Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Claremont Graduate School, John Hick (Wagener 2007:12). John Hick is at the forefront of the Pluralist movement1 in the West and has become extremely popular. Where my concern falls in this assignment is not so much on his pluralist belief, but on his views of the incarnation of Christ. Over 30 000 copies of his book the Myth of God Incarnate have been printed (Hick, Believable, 2006: 2) and it's theory that incarnation is a 'myth' has shaken much of the world. As we shall see in the assignment, the idea that Jesus is both God and man is fundamental to the Christian faith. So, to refute his argument, we will be looking at the viability of the New Testament as information about Jesus, the evidence for Jesus to be God, the evidence for Jesus to be man and the necessity for the incarnation. My hope is also to prove that the incarnation is valid and that it is both true and necessary for the Christian faith.
